Capital Concerns for Rice Export in Cambodia

On Tuesday 21, December 2010. There was a talk between Lim Bun Heng, who is a president of rice processor and exporter of Loran Export-Import Co with Chun Sophal about the future Cambodia's rice production.
Rice Export carries out an indispensable role for Cambodia economic development because we are the major agriculture country. However, we are now having a problem during the rice harvesting season because of insufficient capital. H.E. Lim Bun Heng insisted that in order to export rice smoothly, we should have at least US$10 million. And "currently my company has assets such as land, buildings and rice mills worth about US$8 million and we have only US$3 million of cash capital to buy rice" (said H.E. Lim Bun Heng).

If we cannot increase of capital in the future, then we will have to face a big problem competing with our neighbors countries. " I would like to see more intervention from the government in financing soft loans to all rice exporters so that we will be able to improve our rice business. " said H.E. Lim Bun Heng.

He thinks that it will take at least five more years to become as big Vietnam and Thailand in term of rice producer because now we are enhancing rice productivity and equipping ourselves with the most advanced rice processing machines.
